Much like how variable valve timing can improve efficiency, so can turbochargers. The application of turbochargers may have started with the desire for faster vehicles, but it has an extra benefit. By using a turbocharger, Buick and GMC can use a smaller engine with less horsepower without creating a vehicle that feels sluggish. Small turbos provide the power you need to merge onto highways or pass another car but don’t drink up fuel when you’re driving normally. A great example is the Buick Encore equipped with a 1.4-liter turbocharged engine. With 155 horsepower, you might expect this car to be expensive at the pump but the premium crossover still achieves 32 mpg on the highway.*

As electric alternatives become more ubiquitous in the automotive space, both Buick and GMC are responding. GMC is releasing two electric vehicles under the Hummer name.
